Carie's {Owning} It

This blog is here to document the day to day happenings in my family as well as my training, races, and weight loss. I didn't want to start a third blog, so I decided to make my family blog into a family/fitness blog!

This use to be where I kept tabs on my Weight Loss Journey. It has now changed to the place where I keep tabs on maintaining my weight and my training. I chose to go with "Carie's Owning It" as my new header. When I was visiting my family doctor in March 2012 to discuss my severe postpartum depression, we talked about my dark childhood and how it had been holding me back from living the life that I wanted to live. Dr. Tromblee said to me, "Carie, you need to own your past. Own it. Accept it. And move on." That is what I am doing! I am owning my past, my present, and my future! And I might own a few races along the way!

Quick history on me: I have been struggling with my weight since after I graduated High School in 2005. College, stress, depression... it all had a toll on my body and health. I married in 2007 and gave birth to my daughters in 2009 (Caitlin), 2010 (Rosalie), and 2011 (Vivian). After my third baby was born, I had severe postpartum depression. I needed something to get me out of the dark place that I had been hiding for years and brought me to my heaviest weight of 220 pounds. I wanted to stop hiding behind my clothes, my camera, and my family.

In June of 2012, I decided that I needed the ultimate form of motivation. After having lost almost 20 pounds, I decided to do something I never thought I'd do... I posted four photos of my body. Front, back, and both sides. I knew I wanted to change... and after posting the photos, I debated for an hour about taking them down... but I didn't. Within that first hour of posting my photos, I had an overwhelming amount of emails, Facebook messages, and a few phone calls from people who could relate to my story and wanted to support me in my journey.

I want to inspire you. Being overweight was hard. Dieting is hard. Working out is hard. It is all hard. So I'm sucking it up and pushing forward. I want this for myself. I want to love myself, and that is what this journey is all about. Come and follow my journey!

I want to thank all the wonderful people who have been supporting me and all those who have just started. Thank you so, so much. I literally could not have gotten this far without you. You have my eternal gratitude and love. Now let's go workout!

Motivation:
"Don't be ashamed or embarrassed to dream big. You're living your life with hope, that's a powerful thing."
-- Kara Goucher

"Yes, I have stretch marks, and I don't have a perfect body, but I've worked hard for the one I have, and I'm proud of that."
-- Mama Laughlin, Weight Loss Success Story: Mama Laughlin

"You are a runner, and no one can take that away from you. You are relentlessly moving forward. You are stronger than even you think, and you are about to be amazed by what you can do. One day, very soon, maybe tomorrow, you’ll step outside and marvel at your capabilities. You will not believe your own body, you will realize that you can do this. And a new horizon will open up for you. You are a true inspiration.

I bow to you."
-- Flint, Hey, Fat Girl.

"In running, it doesn't matter whether you come in first, in the middle of the pack, or last. You can say, 'I have finished.' There is a lot of satisfaction in that."
-- Fred Lebow

"It's not about perfect. It's about effort. And when you bring that effort every single day, that's where transformation happens. That's how change occurs."
-- Jillian Michaels

"Love yourself first and everything else falls into line. You have to love yourself to get anything done."
-- Lucille Ball

"Running is all about having the desire to train and persevere until every fiber in your legs, mind, and heart is turned to steel. And when you've finally forged hard enough, you will become the best runner you can be. And that's all you can ask for."
-- Paul Maurer, The Gift - A Runner's Story

"Training to run 26.2 miles is an all-guts-for-little-glory proposition. It involves achy knees, gallons of sweat, chafed skin, and blisters the size of silver dollars. It requires waking at the crack of dawn to run in weather conditions that most people won’t drive in. But it’s on this long, sweaty journey that true personal transformation takes place."
-- Runner's World Marathon Training Guide

"If you're trying to defeat the human spirit, marathoners are the wrong group to target."
-- Mighty Brighties on Facebook

"I don't have a runner's body, but I have a runner's heart - and that is all you need."
-- Army Sergeant Jennifer Morris, Runner's World Challenger

"You have to wonder at times what you're doing out there. Over the years, I've given myself a thousand reasons to keep running, but it always comes back to where it started. It comes down to self-satisfaction and a sense of achievement."
-- Steve Prefontaine

"We run, not because we think it is doing us good, but because we enjoy it and cannot help ourselves...The more restricted our society and work become, the more necessary it will be to find some outlet for this craving for freedom. No one can say, 'You must not run faster than this, or jump higher than that.' The human spirit is indomitable."
-- Sir Roger Bannister, first runner to run a sub-4 minute mile
